Truid Ulfstand leases a plot in Dreggen

AHL Bgf 705 · 27. april 1538 · Bergen

What the letter says

Truid Ulfstand leases the plot «Brommelstoften» in Dreggen in Bergen to Martin Prange, alderman of the German Kontor, for 10 Bergen guilders a year. The agreement was made under the supervision of Bergen councillors and also covers Prange's successors. Truid's man Valentin in Bergen is named in the agreement.

Background

Truid Ulfstand was married to Gjørvel Fadersdatter from 1534, and through her he controlled the inheritance from Knut Alvsson and Alv Knutsson. Alv Knutsson received Dreggen in Bergen from Philippa, the widow of Sigurd Jonsson, in 1472 (DN 1/900). The plot Truid leased out was probably part of this inheritance, but the register does not say so. Dreggen lay next to Bryggen, and the lease to the alderman of the Kontor shows how the family's property in Bergen was used by the Hanseatic merchants. The letter is in the archive of the Bergen traders in Lübeck and is given here after the inventory of that archive.
