SDHK 34312 (DN 22/13) · 1501, uten dag (trolig rundt 29. august) · Tuna
What the letter says
Sten Sture the Elder writes from Tuna to Svante Nilsson that he has spoken with the common people of Dalarna and won their support. He encloses a letter that Svante is to read to the common people of Östergötland. The bishops of Skara and Växjö have asked him to come to their cathedrals. Sten will propose a meeting with the archbishop and the bishops of Strängnäs and Västerås, and he will leave Knut Alvsson behind «häruppe» (up here). He proposes that he, Svante and Hemming Gad meet at Örebro shortly after the feast of the Virgin.
Background
In the summer of 1501 the Swedish Sture party broke with the union king Hans, and the Norwegian councillor of the realm Knut Alvsson, lord of Giske, joined them. The letter shows that Knut was with Sten Sture in Dalarna while Sten rallied the common people for the rebellion. The dating is uncertain. SDHK thinks the letter was written on a Thursday between 16 August and 27 September 1501, probably around 29 August, when Sten and Knut wrote together to Östergötland from Mora (SDHK 34430). A shorter summary is printed in DN 22.
