SDHK 34403 · 27. juli 1501 · Söderköping

What the letter says

Hemming Gad, Sten Sture, Svante Nilsson, Knut Alvsson, Bengt Ryning and Johan Bese write from Söderköping on 27 July 1501 to King Hans. They complain and set conditions for remaining loyal to him.

Background

King Hans was king in Denmark and Norway from 1483 and in Sweden from 1497. In the summer of 1501 a break came between him and the Swedish Sture party. Knut Alvsson, lord of Giske and Norwegian councillor of the realm, was among the senders, side by side with the leading Swedish magnates. The letter is known only from a later copy. Five days later the same men swore an alliance against the king at Vadstena (SDHK 34404). A year later Knut was killed under safe conduct.
