The conspiracy at Vadstena
SDHK 34404 · 1. august 1501 · Vadstena
What the letter says
Members of the Swedish Council of the Realm, Hemming Gad, Sten Sture, Svante Nilsson, Nils Klausson, Knut Alvsson, Bengt Ryning and Johan Bese, swear an alliance at Vadstena on 1 August 1501 against King Hans.
Background
This is the letter of alliance that opened the rebellion against King Hans in Sweden. Knut Alvsson, lord of Giske, is listed here among the councillors of the realm of Sweden, although he was a Norwegian councillor of the realm. He was born in Sweden, and his father Alv Knutsson was a grandson of Katarina Jonsdatter, sister of Sigurd Jonsson. The letter survives in several copies, among them Svante Nilsson's copy book. One of the copies has Knut Eskilsson and Johan Månsson instead of Knut Alvsson and Johan Bese. In the autumn Knut carried the rebellion into Norway.
