Gunpowder for the Danish king
SDHK 38279 · 12. juli 1519 (eller 19. juli) · Borgholm
Karl Knutsson was the son of Knut Alvsson, who had joined the Sture party against King Hans. Here the son appears as marshal in the service of King Hans's son Christian II in the war against Sten Sture the Younger.
What the letter says
The marshal Karl Knutsson (Tre Rosor) and the Danish king's secretary Peder Ottesen acknowledge to Søren Norby, whom SDHK calls commander at Visby, that they have received half a barrel of corned gunpowder from Tigle Gissler in Hamburg. Karl has also received two quarters of gun powder. At the Danish king's wish the powder is to be taken to «Fredriksten». The letter is written in German.
Background
Karl Knutsson was the son of Knut Alvsson. His father had joined the Sture party against King Hans in 1501. In 1519 the son served as marshal under King Hans's son, Christian II, who was then waging war against Sten Sture the Younger for Sweden. Søren Norby was Christian's admiral on Gotland. Which place «Fredriksten» refers to is unclear, and the name is given as SDHK renders it from a copy made in the 1600s. Karl was killed the following year.
