SDHK 39092 · 1534, uten dag · Varberg
Gjørvel Fadersdatter was a granddaughter of Knut Alvsson and became the undisputed owner of the Giske estate from 1538. The morning gift letter dates her marriage to Truid Ulfstand, who was later called «of Giske».
What the letter says
Truid Ulfstand issues at Varberg in 1534 a morning gift letter to his wife, Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter. The letter is known only from an entry in Hadorph's register of the letters at Engsö: «Trudt Ulfstandt morgongofue bref till sin fru Görwel Farsdotter etc.»
Background
Gjørvel Fadersdatter (c. 1510 to 1605) was a granddaughter of Knut Alvsson and became the undisputed owner of the Giske estate from 1538. Her first husband, Peder Nilsson (Grip), died in 1533, and the following year she married the Danish nobleman Truid Ulfstand, commander at Varberg. The morning gift was a gift from the husband to the bride on the day after the wedding, and it became her own property. The letter thus gives a year for the marriage. Truid Ulfstand was later called «til Giske» (of Giske), and in 1544 he had his own estate steward (ombudsmann) on the farm.
