Ture Jönsson demands arbitration against Lady Inger

SDHK 39876 · 17. juni 1528 · Lindholmen

What the letter says

The knight Ture Jönsson of Säm, steward (hovmester) of Sweden, announces at Lindholmen on 17 June 1528 that he wants arbitration under Norwegian law over an inheritance in land and movables after Sir Otte Holgersson. Lady Ingegerd Ottesdatter and her son-in-law Sir Vincent have taken the inheritance by force from Ture Jönsson and his orphaned kinswoman and ward, the maiden Gjørvel.

Background

Ture Jönsson (Tre Rosor) managed the inheritance after Knut Alvsson on behalf of Gjørvel Fadersdatter, Knut's granddaughter, who was then about 18 and unmarried. Lady Inger of Austrått was the daughter of Otte Matsson, who was a co-heir after Junker Hans in 1490, and she had probably taken possession of Giske in 1521 to 1522. The son-in-law was Vincens Lunge, commander at Bergenhus. SDHK calls the deceased Sir Otte Holgersson. Whether he is the same man as Lady Inger's father does not appear from the record. The dispute over the Giske estate was only settled by the mediation at Bud in 1533, and the letter shows that Ture wanted the case tried under Norwegian law.

People: Ingerd Ottesdatter (fru Inger), Gjørvel Fadersdatter (Sparre)
