SDHK 43306 · 11. juli 1519 · uten sted

What the letter says

The captain of mercenaries Stefan van Weberstedt writes to King Christian about the conditions, among them support, that would be needed for him, together with Karl Knutsson (Tre Rosor), to obey the king's order to go to Finland, spend the winter there and bring the land under the king.

Background

Karl Knutsson, son of Knut Alvsson, was in 1519 in the service of Christian II in the war for Sweden. The letter shows that the king wanted to use him to win Finland, which was then part of the Swedish realm. The same week Karl signed as marshal for gunpowder at Borgholm (SDHK 38279). His father had fought with the Sture party against King Hans. The son was now to fight against the Sture party for King Hans's son. Karl was killed the following year, childless.
