Knut Alvsson witnesses a settlement at Sudreim

DN 13/150 · 7 March 1484 · Sudreim

What the letter says

The knight Sir Knut Alvsson, the priest Iver Toresson in Sudreim and the lawcourt member Amund Andresson make known that they were at the vicarage in Sudreim on the first Sunday in Lent 1484. There Audgils Arnulfsson and Eilif Tolvsson were reconciled over a land exchange from the year before, in which Audgils had received 9 øresbol in Vestreng in Høland in return for what he owned in Takun and Steinersby in Rømskog. As an addition Audgils gave Eilif a tunic and a copper kettle, and Eilif, his wife Helga Kolsdatter and their heirs are to make no further complaint.

The letter in modern English (excerpt)

To all men who see or hear this letter, Sir Knut Alvsson, knight, Iver Toresson, priest in Sudreim, and Amund Andresson, member of the lawcourt, send God's greeting and their own. We make known that we were at the vicarage in Sudreim parish on the first Sunday in Lent in the year of our Lord 1484. There we saw and heard that Audgils Arnulfsson and Eilif Tolvsson, on the advice of good men, were amicably reconciled over the land exchange they had made the year before. It concerned 9 øresbol (land that yields one øre in yearly land rent per bol) in Vestreng, for which Audgils in return received as much as he owned in Takun and in Steinersby, which lie in Rømskog. The settlement was that Audgils gave Eilif a tunic worth 4 marks [uncertain interpretation] and a copper kettle of one pound (a measure of weight), so that neither Eilif nor his wife Helga Kolsdatter nor their heirs shall make any further complaint about this purchase. In witness of this we hang our seals on this letter, which was made on the day and in the year stated before. Endorsement: Later, on the back: Letter about Vestreng in Høland.

Background

Knut Alvsson of Tre Rosor was the son of Alv Knutsson and heir to the Giske estate. Sudreim in Romerike was the old manor farm of the Sudreim family, to whom Giske had come through Ingeborg Erlingsdatter, and this suggests that Knut had ties to Sudreim as owner or lord there. The case concerns ordinary farmers, and Knut acts as one of three witnesses with seals, as magnates were often asked to do. An øresbol is land that yields one øre in yearly land rent. That the settlement was arranged with a tunic and a copper kettle shows that goods and clothing were used as payment. Knut Alvsson later led a rebellion against King Hans and was killed under safe conduct in 1502.
