Copy made on Giske of the judgement from Hålogaland
DN 2/585 · 25 May 1405 · Giske
What the letter says
Six men, among them Jon Herbjørnsson and Brother Arne Olavsson, make known on Giske on 25 May 1405 that they have heard read the letter of judgement from lawman Olav Skulesson in Hålogaland with whole seals. They reproduce the letter word for word and set their seals to the copy. The judgement from 1404 gave Håkon Sigurdsson lands and fishing places in Trondenes.
The letter in modern English (excerpt)
To all men who see or hear this letter, Jon Herbjørnsson, Brother Arne Olavsson, Ivar Gunnarsson, Erlend Otamsson, Tomas Vilhjalmsson and Rikard Henriksson send God's greeting and their own and make known: We heard read an open letter from Olav Skulesson, lawman over Hålogaland, and the twelve men of the law court whom he appointed, with their whole and undamaged hanging seals. It reads word for word as written here. [Here follows the letter of judgement DN II no. 580.] In truth of this we, the said men, set our seals to this copy, which was made on Giske on St Urban's Day (25 May) in the year of the Lord 1405.

Background
This is a vidisse, a certified copy of an older letter. Such copies were made because the original could be lost or damaged, and because the owner needed evidence in several places at the same time. Håkon Sigurdsson was the son of Sigurd Havtoresson and Ingeborg Erlingsdatter and held Giske, and the copy was made there. He had won the case about the property in the north against Tideke Vistenaker the year before. That he had the judgement copied suggests that he expected the case might come up again.
