What the archbishop owes fru Inger

DN 9/714 · [Hösten 1532.] · [Throndhjem?]

What the letter says

In the autumn of 1532, probably in Trondheim, Vincens Lunge draws up in his own hand a short summary of what Archbishop Olav still owes fru Inger Ottesdatter in old and new debts. The sum is about 2516½ marks, about 540 våger of rotskjær and 15 barrels and 2 spann of butter. Not included are, among other things, last year's income from Herjedalen and Stjørdalen, land rent the archbishop has collected from her estate, and what stands in the old receipt. Also not included are 100 lodd of silver to Oluf Andersen for a loss of 250 marks.

The letter in modern English

The sum of what the most reverend father lord Archbishop Olav still, both old and new, owes fru Inger Ottesdatter, my dear wife's mother. Item 2516½ marks [written iiɉm och xviɉ, uncertain reading]. Item 540 våger [a våg is c. 18 kg] of rotskjær [split stockfish] [the figure is unclear in the printed text]. Item 15 barrels and 2 spann of butter. Excepted from the sum above are her copper [uncertain reading], guns and this past year's revenue from Herjedalen and Stjørdalen. Item what has been collected of her land rent and so on, as the register says. Also not counted in the sum above is the part that stands on the first leaf of the old lord archbishop's receipt, with the other part that is not valued in the debt register. Likewise not counted are the 100 lodd of silver to Oluf Andersen for the loss of 250 marks he has suffered. On the back in the archbishop's hand [uncertain]: Lord Vincens's own hand.

Background

Lunge was married to Inger's daughter Margrete and here calls her «min kjære hustrus mor», my dear wife's mother. The summary was probably made in preparation for the settlement with Archbishop Olav Engelbrektsson in October 1532, in which Lunge and Nils Lykke mediated between the two. The debt came partly from the dispute from around 1529, which was settled in 1530, and partly from the war winter of 1531 to 1532, when the archbishop's men took goods and men from Inger. Rotskjær was stockfish that had been split along the backbone and dried, and a våg was about 18 kilos. The figures are written in Roman numerals with half signs, and the reading of them is somewhat uncertain.

People: Ingerd Ottesdatter (fru Inger)
