Fru Inger gives the archbishop a receipt for Stjørdal fief

DN 9/736 · 16 June 1533 · Stenviksholm

What the letter says

Fru Ingerd Ottesdatter of Austrått declares at Stenviksholm on 16 June 1533 that Archbishop Olav has delivered to her the crown's leidang, land rent, fines and all other revenues which his bailiff had collected from Stjørdal fief, in Härjedalen, Selbu and Stjørdalen. The archbishop owes her nothing more from the fief. She releases him, the chapter, his heirs and servants from all further claims.

The letter in modern English

I, Ingerd Ottesdatter of Austrått, widow of the honourable, well-born man and stern knight Sir Nils Henriksson, formerly steward of the realm of Norway, God have his soul, acknowledge and make known to all with this my open letter that the most reverend father in God Lord Olav, by God's grace Archbishop of Trondheim and legate of the papal see, has now to my full satisfaction had delivered to me the crown's leidang [a tax originally for the fleet], land rent, sakøre [fines] and all other income which his grace's bailiff had collected from Stjørdal fief, in Härjedalen, Selbu and Stjørdalen, so that I am well content. And his grace owes me nothing from that fief. Therefore I give the said Lord Archbishop Olav and his grace's successors, the chapter, heirs, servants and all his grace's adherents and friends quit, free, clear and loose for me and my heirs from all further claim and suit concerning the said fief's revenues and rights in every way. For further witness and security in this I press my seal below on this my open letter, which is given and written at Stenviksholm on the eve of St Botolph [16 June] in the year of the Lord 1533. [On the back:] General receipt for Stjørdal.

Background

Fru Inger held Stjørdal fief from the crown, and the fief also included Selbu and Härjedalen, which then belonged to Norway. While Archbishop Olav Engelbrektsson sided with Christian II, his bailiff had collected the revenues. Leidang was the old naval levy, which had now become a fixed tax, and sakøre were fines due to the king. The letter is a general receipt that closes the settlement for the fief after the part payment in March of the same year. The note on the back calls it exactly that, a general receipt.
