The dispute with Tage Krabbe over Öen and Öensjö

KB 1588 til 92, s. 204 · July [?] 1589 · København

What the letter says

Tage Krabbe of Jordberga, a gentleman of the court, has complained that the earlier order to judge the dispute over Öen and Öensjö has not yet been carried out. The matter concerns whether the places belong to him or to Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter, Lauge Brahe's widow, on the crown's behalf. Axel Gyldenstierne, Corfitz Viffert, the provincial judge Lauge Urne, Gabriel Sparre, Jørgen Brahe and Christen Gyldenstierne are now ordered to go to the site as soon as possible, examine the case, judge between the parties and give the judgment in writing.

The letter in modern English

Missive to Axel Gyldenstierne, Corfitz Viffert, Lauge Urne, provincial judge, Gabriel Sparre, Jørgen Brahe and Christen Gyldenstierne. Tage Krabbe of Jordberga, gentleman of the court, has reported that the earlier order to them to judge the dispute over whether Öen and Öensjö shall belong to him or to Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter, Lauge Brahe's widow, on the crown's behalf, has not yet been carried out, and he has asked for a letter to them to carry it out. They are therefore ordered to go to the sites as soon as possible, examine the case, judge between the parties and give the judgment in writing. If anyone cannot attend because of lawful hindrance, those who attend shall have authority to take another good man in his place.

Original text

3?. Juli [?] (Kbhvn.).

Background

Gjørvel held Børringe abbey and Froste district as a fief from the crown after she handed over the Giske estate in 1582. When a boundary dispute arose over land in the fief, she conducted the case on the crown's behalf, because the land was crown land. A gentleman of the court (hofsinde) was a nobleman serving at court. Öen and Öensjö probably lay near Børringe, though this is uncertain. The date is unclearly read in the scan.

People: Gjørvel Fadersdatter (Sparre)
