The Børringe farmers to haul lime to Malmö

KB 1588 til 92, s. 30 · 19. mai eller juni 1588 [usikker lesning] · København

What the letter says

The regency council writes to Hans Spiegel, Lady Gjørvel, Jørgen Brahe and Jørgen Urne. The burgomasters and council of Malmö have begun a large building work on the town's fortifications and need wagons to fetch lime and other materials. When the burgomasters and council send word, the four are therefore to order the farmers under them who live nearest to turn out with horse and wagon and each haul a load of lime or other material to Malmö.

Background

Frederick II died in April 1588, and his son Christian IV was only 10. The realm was governed by a regency council of councillors of the realm until the coronation in 1596. Gjørvel held Børringe abbey and Froste district as a fief, and the farmers there owed the crown carting service with horse and wagon. The letter shows that in practice she was part of the crown's local administration in Scania. The date is unclearly read in the scan.
