Background

In the winter of 1589 to 1590 King James VI of Scotland came to Denmark with Queen Anne, the sister of Christian IV, whom he had married in Oslo in November 1589. The letter just before in the register mentions this very visit to Kronborg. The foreign princes were therefore probably the Scottish royal couple and their retinue. The king's mother was the dowager queen Sophie. That Gjørvel, nearly 80 years old, was summoned to court shows that she still belonged to the leading nobility.
