The farmers of Froste district to take their share of the transport duty
KB 1588 til 92, s. 702 f. · 13. desember 1591 ·
What the letter says
The crown's farmers in Hörby fief in Scania have complained that they are heavily burdened with transporting and feeding the king's men travelling through to Blekinge, with no help from the crown's farmers in Froste district, which Gjørvel Fadersdatter holds as a fief. She is ordered to see that the king's men who come to the district get transport with wagons and the like there in the same way as in Hörby fief, so that the farmers there do not bear the whole burden and are not entirely ruined.
The letter in modern English
Missive to Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter. The crown's farmers in Hörby fief in Scania have complained that when any of the king's men travel through there to Blekinge, with a pass or in any other way, they are greatly burdened with transporting and keeping them without getting any help from the crown's farmers in Froste district, with which she is enfeoffed. She is therefore ordered to give instructions that when the king's men come to the district, they shall likewise have transport with wagons and the like there as in Hörby fief, so that the farmers in that fief do not have the whole burden and are not entirely ruined.
Original text
Background
The transport duty was one of the heaviest burdens on the farmers. They had to provide horse, wagon and food for the king's men on the road. Hörby and Froste district lie in central Scania, on the road from the Øresund towards Blekinge. The letter shows that Gjørvel as fief holder answered for the farmers in the fief carrying out their duties to the crown.
