KB 1588 til 92, s. 831 f. · 29. juni 1592 ·

What the letter says

Hack Ulfstand, the king's steward and fief holder at Malmøhus, is to send a large number of bricks from Fuelsang to Copenhagen Castle as soon as possible. Oluf Rosensparre and Lady Gjørvel are ordered to tell all the crown's farmers in Froste district to turn out with horses and wagons at Fuelsang and each haul 2 loads of bricks to Malmö, or else be punished for disobedience.

The letter in modern English

Missive to Oluf Rosensparre [and Lady Gjørvel]. Since Hack Ulfstand, the king's steward and fief holder at Malmøhus, is very soon to send a considerable number of bricks from Fuelsang [Fogelsång?] to Copenhagen Castle, Oluf Rosensparre [Lady Gjørvel] shall, on further notice from Hack Ulfstand or his deputy, order all the crown's farmers in Froste district to turn out at once with their horses and wagons at Fuelsang and then each haul 2 loads of bricks to Malmö, unless they wish to be charged and punished for disobedience.

Background

Bricks for Copenhagen Castle were shipped from Malmö, and the farmers of Scania had to cart them to the harbour as part of their carting duty. Fuelsang is probably Fogelsång near Lund. The edition's note says that the letter is entered as addressed to Oluf Rosensparre, but according to the draft it also went to Gjørvel. Hack Ulfstand belonged to the same family as Truid Ulfstand, Gjørvel's second husband.

People: Gjørvel Fadersdatter (Sparre)
