Henning Hansson may lease Giske year by year

NRR 10, s. 589 f. · 24. juli 1656 · Akershus

What the letter says

At Akershus on 24 July 1656 Henning Hansson receives a letter on the Giske manor and estate. He has asked to keep the Giske estate on lease year after year, as long as he pays the dues on time. From May Day 1658, when his lease runs out, he may keep the estate year by year until the king decides otherwise or wishes to lease it out himself. The terms are the same as in 1654: leidang, land rent, taxes and labour and provision money according to Sehested's rent roll, 1160 riksdaler a year at Bergenhus, and the king keeps the tithe and the wreck.

The letter in modern English

Henning Hansson [Smidt] received a letter on the Giske manor and estate. Frederick III. Makes known to all that since Henning Hansson has humbly asked us that he may keep the Giske estate on lease year after year, as long as he pays at the proper time the dues stated in his lease, which fall due on the coming day of Philip and James 1658, we have graciously granted, allowed and permitted, and herewith grant, allow and permit, that the said Henning Hansson from the said Philip and James 1658, year after year, until further gracious arrangement or until we ourselves wish to lease out the estate, may receive and collect all the fixed leidang and land rent of the tenants and servants belonging to Giske manor, and the yearly taxes, labour and provision money, in the same way as he has held it on lease until now, according to the drawn-up and sealed rent roll that Sir Hannibal Sehested has handed over to us. Likewise the variable income, that is the first and third year's [leasehold fees ...] [...] for his own benefit all the profit that may come from the manor's farming, and charge us no cost in any way. Likewise the tenants may and shall carry out all the manor's sowing and harvest, close and maintain the fences, and bring and deliver their land rent and dues at the usual places at the proper time, with other farm labour they are obliged to by the rent roll and have done until now

Background

Henning Hansson Smidt was the lessee at Giske throughout the 1650s. That he received an open-ended extension two years before the old one expired suggests that the king was satisfied with him. That is an inference. The following year Giske was transferred to Selius Marselis, see the letter of 24 November 1657. A note in the edition says the letter is missing from the register.
