What the letter says
In Copenhagen on 12 February 1605 King Christian IV writes to Peder Ivarsson [Jernskjegg]. Dorette Christensdatter, who lived on the farm of Eidsten in his fief and held it free for life, has died. Peder has asked what to do with the farm. The king asks him to take it in under the fief and administer its fixed and variable revenue in the same way as the rest of Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter's estate with which he is enfeoffed.
The letter in modern English
Peder Ivarsson [Jernskjegg] received a letter concerning a farm, Eidsten, in the fief. Christian IV. Our favour first. Know that you have humbly informed us that Dorette Christensdatter, who lived at Eidsten, is said to have died. She had been graciously enfeoffed with the farm to keep free and quit for her lifetime. You humbly ask to be told how you are now to deal with the farm. We ask you to take it in under the fief and to deal with its fixed and variable revenue and income in the same way as with the rest of Lady Gjørvel [Fadersdatter Gyldensparre]'s estate with which you are graciously enfeoffed. Copenhagen, 12 February 1605.

Background
The letter was written two months before Gjørvel died at Börringe on 20 April 1605, yet the edition refers to the property as «Fru Gjørilds Gods» (Lady Gjørvel's estate) without saying she was dead. Peder Ivarsson Jernskjegg of Fritsø was feudal lord of Brunla fief near Larvik, and a later letter of 1617 shows that he held Brunla and Numedal together with the Crown property that had been Gjørvel's. Eidsten lies in Brunlanes. Gjørvel had given her estate south of the mountains to the king in 1586, and it was administered as a separate part of the fief. Dorette Christensdatter is otherwise unknown here.
