NRR 6, s. 280 f. · 1631 ·
What the letter says
In 1631 Jens Juel of Kjeldgård receives a quittance for the accounts he has rendered for Akershus castle and fief. He held the fief from May Day 1618 after Envold Kruse until Christopher Urne took over as governor. Besides the fief he has accounted for the property the king received from the late Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter, for the king's share of the tithes, for three farms with a sawmill in Brunla fief placed under Akershus after Peder Ivarsson's death, and for other property.
The letter in modern English
Jens Juel of Kjeldgård received a quittance for Akershus castle and fief. Christian IV. Makes known to all that Jens Juel of Kjeldgård, our man, councillor and commander at Aalborghus, has now finally rendered us a proper account of his dues for the yearly fixed revenue and income belonging to our and the Crown of Norway's castle and fief of Akershus, with which he was for some time graciously enfeoffed by us. The account runs from the day of Philip and James 1618, when he first received the castle and fief in charge and defence after the late Envold Kruse of Hjermeslevgård, to the day of Philip and James 1629 [?], when he was released from it and Christopher Urne of Åsmark, our man, councillor and governor in Norway, was graciously enfeoffed with it in turn. Likewise he has rendered account and report for the property we have graciously received from the late Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter [Gyldensparre], and for our share of the tithes collected in the fief, and further for three farms with a sawmill and its works in Brunla fief, which after the death of the late Peder Ivarsson [Jernskjegg] and by our command have been placed under Akershus fief, and for some other property we received from Hartvig Huitfeldt, and for Master Finn Sivertsson's dues from Tønsberg deanery [...]

Background
Jens Juel was governor-general (statholder) of Norway from 1618 to 1629, and as feudal lord of Akershus he also administered the Crown property that had been Gjørvel's. A quittance was the king's declaration that the accounts were approved and that the feudal lord owed nothing more. The letter shows that Gjørvel's estate south of the mountains was still kept as a separate item 26 years after her death. The text has «1639» for the year Juel gave up the fief, but Christopher Urne became governor in 1629, so the figure is probably an OCR error. The extract has no date. The letter follows one dated 19 January 1631.
