The letter in modern English

Hannibal Sehested received a quittance for Akershus. Christian IV. Makes known that Hannibal Sehested of Nøraggergård, our man, councillor, governor in our realm of Norway and official at our castle of Akershus, has now finally rendered us a good and exact account of his dues for the yearly fixed revenue and income belonging to our and the Crown of Norway's castle and fief of Akershus, and also for the estate of the late Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter, likewise the ship districts of Heggen and Frøland and the Eskeberg estate, and also for our and the Crown's share of the tithes and the clerical revenue collected for our castle of Akershus, with which he has until now been graciously enfeoffed against dues. The account runs from the day of Philip and James 1642, when he first received the castle and fief in charge and defence after Sir Christopher Urne of Åsmark, knight, our man, councillor, chancellor of the realm and official at our castle of Dragsholm, to the day of Philip and James 1646, when we graciously granted and enfeoffed the said Hannibal Sehested with the fixed and variable revenue and income of Akershus castle and fief free and quit, without any accounts or dues. Likewise he has rendered account and report for the yearly dues of Tønsberg deanery and for the variable income that has meanwhile fallen due and been collected in the subordinate bailiwicks of Akershus fief [.

Background

Hannibal Sehested was governor-general of Norway from 1642 and one of the most powerful men in the realm. From 1646 he held Akershus without any duty to render accounts, and this is the final settlement for the first four years. Gjørvel's estate south of the mountains was still a separate item in the fief accounts 42 years after her death. The extract has no date. In the edition the letter follows one dated Frederiksborg 5 August 1647.
