What the letter says
King Frederick III writes to Sir Hannibal Sehested about Giske, Verne abbey and Nygård, which are to be assigned to him for his claim on the Crown. Sehested has produced letters and proofs for a large sum of money. For the warship Hannibal, which he built at the wish of Christian IV in a letter of 11 May 1646, the Crown owes 29,450 riksdaler according to valuation and assignment. For loans in the last war in ready money, silver, gold and copper he is owed 46,482 riksdaler according to a bond of 8 May 1646. The extract ends here.
The letter in modern English
Sir Hannibal Sehested received a letter about Giske, Verne abbey and Nygård, which are to be assigned to him for his claim on the Crown. Frederick III. Our special favour first. Background
The letter shows how large the debt was: the two items in the extract alone come to nearly 76,000 riksdaler. By comparison, Giske, Verne abbey and Nygård were reckoned the same month at 43,378 riksdaler, so the property covered only part of the claim. Sehested had advanced the Crown money, silver, gold and copper during the Hannibal War of 1643 to 1645. The date is not in the extract. A letter a few pages later refers to a missive to the governor-general dated Frederiksborg 22 December 1648, and this is probably that letter.
