NRR 9, s. 25 · 13. juni 1648 · København

What the letter says

In Copenhagen on 13 June 1648 the governor-general Hannibal Sehested is informed by King Frederick III that the late Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter's estate in Norway is to be sold to pay part of the Crown's debts. If he wants any of it for his claim, Jens Bjelke of Austrått and Vincents Bildt of Nes have been ordered to assign him the property south of the mountains, and Ove Bjelke of Austrått and Børge Juel of Lungegård the property north of the mountains, as much as he wishes, at the tariff he himself is to use towards other creditors.

The letter in modern English

Governor-general Hannibal Sehested received a letter concerning taking his payment in Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter's estate. Frederick III. Our special favour first. Since it has been found good that the late Lady Gjørvel Fadersdatter's estate in our realm of Norway is to be sold and disposed of in order to discharge part of the debts of the Crown of Norway, we have, in case you want any of the property for your claim on the Crown, graciously ordered Jens Bjelke of Austrått etc. and Vincents Bildt of Nes, our men and servants, to assign to you from Lady Gjørvel's estate south of the mountains, and Ove Bjelke of Austrått etc. and Børge Juel of Lungegård etc. from that north of the mountains, as much as you wish of it, at the tariff you yourself have been ordered to use when disposing of property to other creditors. We wish to let you know this for your information, so that it can be deducted from your claim and properly entered at our Treasury. Copenhagen, 13 June 1648. Signed: Corfitz Ulfeldt, Christian Thomesen, Mogens Kaas, Olaf Parsberg.

Background

This is Sehested's own letter about the arrangement of the day before. When the king wrote to both parties, none of the feudal lords could refuse to assign the property. In December of the same year Sehested received a deed for Sunnmøre fief and Giske manor. Hannibal Sehested was married to Christiane, daughter of Christian IV, and was at the height of his power in 1648.
