Arne Arnmodsson

b. c. 960 to 970

Arne Arnmodsson, born c. 960 to 970, is the first of the family who, by all appearances, sat at Giske. Snorri calls him a lendmann, a magnate in the king's service, «mektig og gjæv og ein god ven til kong Olav» (powerful and worthy and a good friend of King Olaf). He was married to Tora, daughter of Torstein Galge, and father of Kalv, Finn, Torberg and Arne. He died after the conversion to Christianity and was probably buried at the church, so the memorial stone (bautastein) on Ørnebakken is hardly his.

The first of the family who, by all appearances, sat at Giske. Lendmann, a magnate in the king's service, under King Olaf the Holy, «mektig og gjæv og ein god ven til kong Olav» (powerful and worthy and a good friend of King Olaf), writes Snorri. He was married to Tora, daughter of Torstein Galge. He died after the conversion to Christianity, and was therefore probably buried at the church. The memorial stone (bautastein) on Ørnebakken on Giske can thus hardly be his.
